Hastings & St Leonards 110th International Sea Angling Boat Festival.

At long last after four postponements the boats were finally able to get out last Sunday to complete this years Festival sponsored by Sussex Plumbing Supplies. In the morning the wind was light and off the land the sea was calm with a gentle swell in the afternoon it though backed to the WSW and picked up making for an uncomfortable last few hours. The late low tide meant wind against tide for most of the match which complicated matters.

The postponements unfortunately meant that several competitors were unable to make the match. However there was a very decent turnout and plenty of fish were caught. This year smoothounds were lacking in number and quality with just a few modest fish weighed in. The wrasse however featured well making up the top bags. This match is determined on the five best specimens weighed in with points being given according to the percentage of the specimen weight.

This year’s winner also won it last year and Paul Murray’s excellent bag of wrasse for 386 points was enough for the rare double winning the South of England Trophy and the first prize of £500. Paul had 363 last year which would have only placed him fourth this year which was a good indication of better bags this year.

Rex Palmer had the best specimen again a wrasse of 4lb 7oz 10dr for 112 points narrowly beating Bill Ellis’ best wrasse by half an ounce for the Friendship Trophy and £500 best specimen prize.

Sunita Cramp also had a very good match landing the biggest fish, a conger eel of 39lb and having the heaviest bag (55lb) and securing the Ladies Rosebowl.

Top Junior was Charlie Wells who took all three junior trophies.

Steve Carey took the Veterans Trophy with 281 points.

The Prizes were presented by Vice Chairman Jack Reece QPM and great thanks for generous support go to the main sponsor Glenn Vinall of Sussex Plumbing Supplies, Hastings Borough Council, Hastings Hire Centre, White’s Seafood & Steak bar, Berforts Ltd and C&G Commercial services Ltd. Thanks also to tackle suppliers Akios, Sonik and Svendsen Sports for donating tackle prizes.

Hastings & St Leonards AA Autumn Boat Match

The autumn boat competition was finally fished on Sunday after several postponements due to the weather. It was well supported on a fine day for late November with 10 boats containing 28 anglers taking part. This competition is for cod and whiting and is commodore fished with all boats being within a mile of a bouy put down by the commodore. This year it was inshore off the cliff coastguard station. This shallow area is often good for autumn cod – provided there water is coloured and a decent tide. Unfortunately the water was quite clear in the light wind and the short tide made for little movement until late on. A good variety of fish were caught, whitings, dabs, gurnard, plaice dogfish and smoothounds were all reported, everything except cod almost!

The two main trophies were the S O Glenister Cup for the heaviest cod or member of the cod family and was won by Mike Weston with a whiting of 1lb 7oz and the Friendship Trophy for the heaviest three whiting also won by Mike Weston with 3lb 11oz. Best Junior was Charlie Wells with 3 whiting for 2lb 4oz

South Coast Beach Championship held Sunday 13th November

This year’s competition was well supported with some 95 anglers taking part. Conditions were difficult though with a stiff easterly breeze and very bright sunshine which when out of the wind was pleasantly warm. Despite a fair chop on the sea the easterly wind direction did not give the sea any great colour and with the bright sun the whiting were very shy, with the usual good bags at this time of year not occurring. Flounders and unusually red gurnard being the best fish with whitings and a few dabs making up the numbers.

Overall winner was Jamie Morgan fishing in section B at the Newchurch with a fine weight of 2lb 10oz beating Steve Durrant with 2lb 7oz, third was Ian Bowell on 2lb 1oz. The best flatfish was Steve Durrant’s flounder of 1lb 7oz and roundfish was Jamie Morgan’s Red Gurnard of 1lb 0oz. The juniors were well represented with Jed Johnson winning section D with 2 flounders for 1lb 9oz and the junior prize. Millie Crosby took the ladies prize, sponsored by Serenity Hair and beauty.

The main prize of £500 was presented to the winner by the Main Sponsor Barry Coleman of Coleman Construction and Utilities Ltd and whose continuing support was much appreciated.
