Do you know that if your boat is fitted with a VHF radio or if you have a portable VHF radio then it must be licensed and did you know the licence is free and can easily be applied for online at http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/radiocommunication-licences/ships-radio/

When you apply for the licence your boat will be issued with a call sign and if you have a DSC VHF then you can also ask for an MMSI number to be issued.

If you ever need to call the coastguard they will ask for your call sign so you better have one otherwise it won’t be just Roger meeting you when you come ashore. If you have a DSC VHF radio then program it with your boats MMSI number (issued with the radio licence) and also connect your GPS to the VHF radio that way if you every have to press that distress button your position and MMSI will be transmitted instantly to everybody in VHF range with a DSC radio including Dover Coastguard who can then scramble the paraffin budgie or the boys next door to get you.

If you need an operator’s licence (not required to license you boats radio) then the RYA run short courses. If there is enough interest a course could possibly be run at the club.
